BEK has in recent weeks been the scene of the last updates before artist Jørgen Larsson presents his new installation Romklang at the restaurant Soria Mora in Oslo. Here guests can affect the sound in the room through a firmer grip on the ketchup bottle.

Time and place:

A paper on Jamoma Audio Graph, a framework for audio processing, by Tim Place (74 Objects LLC, US), Trond Lossius (BEK) and Nils Peters (McGill University, CIRMMT, Ca) has been accepted for the upcoming DAFx-10 13th International Conference on Digital Audio Effects.

One of the important features of the framework is how it enables work on multichannel audio signals using single patch chords in patching environments such as Max and PureData.

More info on the Jamoma project can be found here.

Abstract

Jamoma Audio Graph is a framework for creating graph structures in which unit generators are connected together to process dynamic multi-channel audio in real-time. These graph structures are particularly well-suited to spatial audio contexts demanding large numbers of audio channels, such as Higher Order Ambisonics, Wave Field Synthesis and microphone arrays for beamforming. This framework forms part of the Jamoma layered architecture for interactive systems, with current implementations of Jamoma Audio Graph targeting the Max/MSP, PureData, Ruby, and AudioUnit environments.

Time and place:

Ricardo del Pozo will attend The New Zealand Electroacoustic Music Symposium (NZEMS) 2010. His presentation will focus on his latest work “adaptation/volume”, and the use of Jamoma as a tool for artistic expression. NZEMS is hosted by The University of Auckland and takes place from 1. – 3. September.

A brief description from Ricardo about the invitation:

In connection with NZEMS 2010 (The New Zealand Electro Acoustic Music Symposium) I have been asked to give a presentation of my master’s work, “adaptation / volume”. among other things, the presentation will deal with the use of Jamoma as a tool for development and production of artistic expressions and ideas.

As this Symposium’s main focus is on multi-channel sound work, I will also address the opportunities for spatialisation of sound that is unique to Jamoma. The presentation will reflect BEK involvment in the development of Jamoma, and how collaboration with BEK constituted an important part of my master’s project.

Ricardo del Pozo is supported by BEK for this travel, and we wish him a nice and interesting tour.

Time and place:

BEK will coproduce an experimental animated videoclip by Marieke Verbiesen that combines various forms of animation.

This animated videoclip for a dutch electronic musicduo will combine animation techniques as stopmotion and 2d animation with Chromakeying, Animatronics and Liveaction. The clip is inspired by early animationtechniques that were combined with liveshot footage, such as the films by Ray Harryhausen

The films by Ray Harryhausen such as “The Beast from 20.000 Fantoms” (1953) fit perfectly into the monster movie stucture: Tampering with nature, warnings ignored, sympathetic monster and science prevails. Model animated characters interact with, and are a part of, the live-action world, with the idea that they will cease to call attention to themselves as an animation.

The neo-Monster film genre uses speculative depictions of phenomena that are not necessarily accepted by mainstream beliefs, such as extra-terrestial life forms, alien worlds and time travel, often along with futuristic elements such as spacecraft, robots or other technologies. In many cases derived from science fiction, used by filmmakers who were indiffrent to standards like scientific plausibility and plotlogic. The genre has existed since the early years of silent cinema, when Georges Melies “A trip to the Moon” from 1902 amazed audiences with its trick photography effects.

Time and place:

BEK has commisioned a music piece from american composer and musician Jeff Carey. This multichannel work is beeing developed in our production studio this summer. Later in September and Octobre Jeff will be back for more composing, more software writing, and in charge of Dipole, two main workshops at BEK this fall.

In the crack of a whip energy transfers down the taper of the handle translating into sound. The initial rush of air created by the motion of the cord through the air is transformed into a sharp crack where the end of the whip exceeds the speed of sound; a small sonic boom.

The idea that a sound is transformed by the quality of motion is the starting point for a new performative multichannel work composed by Jeff Carey and commissioned by BEK which will be presented in Bergen in October.

Jeff Carey composes fixed media multichannel computer music and has performed real-time computer music in solo and ensembles like Office-R(6), USA/USB, the N-Ensemble, SKIF++ using gestural controllers and self written software.

Seldom bridging the divide in these approaches in computer music, his focus for this composition is in performative aspects of spatial sound in the instrumental context: gestural control of both sound production and localization in ways that are compositionally meaningful.

Working from the analogy of the whip, this piece explores the transformation of sound in place and in motion.
More information about Jeff Carey and his work is available at http://jeffcarey.foundation-one.org

This commission is supported by Art Council Norway.

Time and place:

The mail archives of the Max mailing list for the years 1997-1999 have been restored and are now available at the BEK server.

http://max-archive.bek.no

Max, the interactive visual programming environment for music, audio, and media has been in use since the early 1990s. Over that period several mailing lists and forums have been used for exchange between users. Large parts of the archives of abandoned lists have been offline and possibly lost for a long while.

Following a discussion on the Max mailing list (hosted by BEK), and with the help of Jon Witte, we have restored the archives for 1997-1999, the three years when MSP was first released, and also a period of turbulence related to Netochka Nezvanova, including the “should she stay or should she go” voting process.

Time and place:

They will be presenting Ghost Architecture, an audio-visual performance based on material recorded around the sites of 2nd. world war German fortifications on islands off the west coast of Norway, near Bergen.

As part of their strategy to control the shipping lanes of the North Sea/North Atlantic, the German forces built fortifications, bunkers and airstrips all along the Norwegian coast. Today, many of these structures still remain, most of them disused relics, overgrown and almost forgotten, but some of them preserved as museums.

Jeremy Welsh has been photographing in and around these relics for a number of years, while sound artist Trond Lossius recently created a site-specific audio installation in a deep tunnel beneath one of the largest subterranean fortresses on the island of Sotra, near Bergen.

The presentation will combine elements of the audio materials used in the installation with photographic images, video and text to realize a work that is more about the experience of these places than a historical account of their wartime significance.

The project is supported by Bergen National Academy of the Arts.

Time and place:

A preview of Transiteatret’s new show Ressentiment – Pavane til en død prinsesse will be staged on June 5. at Trålerrederiet in Stamsund.

What new and – until now unknown – drama is being produced when new naturalistic research creeps out of the laboratory windows, turn into talkshow-entertainment in public channels before it ends up as part of our understanding of ourselves?

Ressentiment is a term that denotes a frustration that has its origin in a deep sense of powerlessness. Tore Vagn Lid’s new piece is on the track of such powerlessness anatomy. This visual radioplay can be compared to the typical chamber musical way of changing between stage and music.

The performance is produced by Transiteatret-Bergen in co-production with BIT-Teatergarasjen and Black Box Teater, and in cooperation with Den Nationale Scene, Bergen Centre for Elektronic Arts (BEK) and Kunstnerhuset WRAP. The performance is supported by Spenn.no, Kunstløftet, Norsk Kulturråd and Bergen Kommune.

BEK contribution to the production is associated with Sound design / Sound engineering by Thorolf Thuestad and Sound Engineering / Material Dramaturgy by Roar Sletteland.

We’ll be back with the date of the Bergen premiere.

Time and place:

September 9-10, 2010

An International Symposium at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway.

http://www.urbanimages.no

The Urban Images symposium brings together an internationally renowned group of artists and scholars for a two-day program in order to discuss the field of artistic film and video related to architecture and urban space. The objective of the symposium is to expand theoretical concepts and artistic tools for understanding the inherent qualities of moving images and its relationship to urban culture. The program touches upon moving images’ influence on urban architecture, urban architecture’s relationship to avant-garde film, the city as a source for artistic film and video, and reflections on urban architecture in recent film and video art.

Considering the globally expanding urban developments and the increasingly fluid borders between research in architecture and moving images, this symposium presents important cross-disciplinary inquiries in the fields of architecture and visual practice. Bearing in mind Gilles Deleuze’s sensitivity to the ways in which contemporary culture is becoming fundamentally an audiovisual culture, the symposium will outline ontological and psychological relationships to moving images in the context of urban environment.

The following people will present their most recent research in this field: Parveen Adams, Giuliana Bruno, Bull.Miletic, Andreas Bunte, Beatriz Colomina, Mark Cousins, Edward Dimendberg, Tom Gunning, Henrik Gustafsson, Marit Paasche and Judy Radul.

The papers and artistic presentations from the symposium will be published in a book scheduled for release in early 2011.

For further information and registration: http://www.urbanimages.no
Registration deadline: Friday September 3, 2010
Registration fee: NOK 400 (students NOK 200)

Questions regarding the symposium can be directed to: Synne Bull: synne.bull@khio.no and Marit Paasche: maripaas@khio.no

The Urban Images symposium is organized by the Oslo Academy of Fine Art in collaboration with Atelier Nord. Generous support is granted by The Freedom of Expression Foundation, Public Art Norway (KORO), Oslo Municipality, Embassy of the United States in Oslo, and German Embassy in Oslo.

High Five Cross Media Content for Kids

AN INVITATION from NORDISK FILM & TV FOND

WHY?

The Nordic region has a proud tradition of producing high quality film and TV programs for children. However, content is no longer consumed in cinemas and on TV screens only. Mobile phones, consoles and online platforms are new arenas for storytelling. Our vision is to ensure that innovative and adventurous Nordic universes are available for children in cinemas and on TV as well as on various new platforms.

WHAT?

Nordisk Film & TV Fond wishes to support the development of Cross Media Content For Kids within the target groups: 3-6, 7-10 and 11-13 years of age.

6 development supports are in play – each being NOK 250.000.

International experts will consult the development process.

A Pitching Workshop and a Financing Forum will wrap up the process.

Nordic Film and TV-production companies may apply and we strongly encourage collaboration with Nordic game suppliers.

VISION

The vision is to develop six new and strong Nordic cross media film and TV projects for children, that unfolds on at least one other media platform besides Cinema, DVD and TV. The projects must be possible to broadcast on the Nordic TV-stations. The Fund encourages collaborations across the Nordic boarders as well as across the film, TV and gaming industries, to ensure the best possible and most innovative and adventurous universes for children. The goal is that at least two of the developed projects will go into production.

GENRE / THEME

There are no specific requirements to genre and theme. The Fund wishes to receive a wide range of projects; animation, live action, drama and documentary.

TARGET GROUPS

“Children” is a broad range of age. Therefore, the Fund categorizes three indicative target groups:

3-6 year olds (pre-school children)
The child typically cannot read and write and parents manage children’s media consumption. Public Service content is strong.

7-10 year olds (school children)

The child can read and write and begins to have own media habits. Starts to go online, play games and use social networks and mobile phone.

11-13 year olds (tweens)
Towards independence from parents – friends are important. Tweens are very active media users.

FINANCING

The Fund invites projects in the early development phase (that have no financing in place) as well as projects that have started development (and have financing partly in place) to apply. It is not mandatory that own or other financing is raised at the time of application, and there is thus no requirement for a budget higher than the development amount provided by High Five Cross Media Content For Kids. However, other financing is considered positive for the project.

DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

As part of the High Five Kids initiative the selected projects will participate in a development process (two workshops) with input and coaching from international experts and a presentation of the completed projects for Nordic financiers at a Nordic financing forum. The development process will run from October 2010 to February / March 2011.

DATES

*	6 September 2010: Deadline for submission of application
*	27 September 2010: Selected projects will be announced
*	Medium October 2010: Workshop 1
*	February / March 2011: Workshop 2 (incl. Nordic financing forum)

MORE INFO:

Please see High Five Kids Guidelines (www.nordiskfilmogtvfond.com)

Having recently seen examples of important non-spam mails having been filtered out by the BEK mail server, we have decided to ease up the spam filter slightly. Unfortunately this also makes some more spam mails pass through than previously. We do train the spam filter at regular intervals, and hopefully it will gradually adjust itself to the new settings.

The Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation and the AIC Electronic Media Group are pleased to announce a two-day workshop, “TechFocus I: Caring for Video Art,” to take place September 1-2 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, in conjunction with the exhibition, “Haunted – Contemporary Video, Photography and Performance.” Supported by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, this inaugural workshop is starting a series of four planned workshops on the preservation and presentation of electronic art, acknowledging the 10th anniversary of the ground-breaking “TechArchaeology” symposium.

This workshop aims to acquaint participants with the technical functionality of both analog and digital video art as well as the technical and aesthetic impact of digitization, compression and format migration. A comparative ‘school of seeing’ will be offered to sensitize the participant’s eye for image structure and quality. Sessions focus on the varieties of display modes of video art in an exhibition context and demonstrate the impact of equipment selection on the integrity of the artwork. Curators, conservators and technicians will provide insight into their decision-making processes and discuss their perspectives on the preservation of video art installations.

The confirmed speakers are John Hanhardt, Chrissie Iles, Jennifer Blessing, Joanna Phillips, Steven Dye, Heather Weaver, Maurice Schechter, Mona Jimenez, Howard Besser, Chris Lacinek and Agathe Jarczyk.
