Urmakarens hjarte

Teaterforestillingen Urmakarens hjarte er en eventyrthriller for barn og unge inspirert av norsk folkemytologi og moderne fantasy-litteratur.

Trond Lossius fra BEK har bidratt i prosjektet med programering av et egenutviklet 16-kanals surround lyd avviklingssystem, hvor han benytter programvaren Jamoma som plattform for arbeidet.

Nypremière i Førde fredag 16. mars.

Urmakarens hjarte spelte for fulle hus under Førdefestivalen 2011. I stykket møter vi tolv år gamle Runa som har mista mor si i ei ulukke. På bursdagen sin finn Runa vegen inn in ein mystisk skog. Her møter ho ei flaggermus som fortel at tida har stansa, og at kjærleiken berre er eit ekko som snart vil forsvinne. Har dette noko med Runa sin røyndom å gjere?

Gjennom bruk av video og lyd vert det skapt eit visuelt lydunivers, med folkesongar Unni Løvlid og fire skodespelarar på scena. Stykket er ein skremmande, morosam og vakker eventyrthriller for større born og unge (frå ni år).

Live Animation Workshop at Click New Media Art Festival

Marieke Verbiesen will be in Copenhagen to give a live animation workshop and collaborative performance at the Click New Media Art Festival in Helsingør Denmark.

This years theme at CLICK A/V festival is the theme “The Ear, The Eye, The Hand” expanding the audiovisual experience with the human intervention, the glitch feed, the hand crafted pixel perfection.

Jamoma workshops på Art.On.Wires

Art.On.Wires er en årlig festival i Oslo for forskere, utviklere, kreative og kunstnere. En uke i mai settes det opp en temporær lab som utforsker og lager ny teknologi for kunstneriske uttrykk i en hyggelig og innovativ atmosfære. Dette året vil festivalen tilby flere workshops som er relatert til Jamoma.

Trond Lossius fra BEK vil gi en generell introduksjon til Jamoma og en workshop om arbeid med surround lyd. Alexander Refsum Jensenius fra fourMs lab ved Universitetet i Oslo vil lede en workshop om motion capture.

Stenging av gamle IKEA Åsane med lyd og lys

Den siste lørdagen før IKEA flytter til nytt bygg i Åsane, lager Borealis en event på det gamle varehuset. Trond Lossius og Anna Wignell presenterer den stedspesifikke installasjonen Pieces of bits while disassembling (for IKEA) mens Roar Sletteland presenterer Eske med platespiller.

Kunstnerne Trond Lossius og Anna Wignell bidrar til markeringen med ”Pieces of bits while disassembling (for IKEA)”, en felles lyd- og lysinstallasjon plassert i øverste etasje av gamle IKEA Åsane. Utenfor restauranten vil Roar Slettelands ”Eske med platespiller” snurre ABBAs LP «Arrival» fra 1975 i skiftende – men alltid feil – tempo, fra kl. 15:00 og ut over ettermiddagen. Det vil også være ulike Fluxus flash performancer – nyskapende, humoristiske performance-stykker fra Fluxus-perioden på 1960-tallet som inneholder bruk av kremkaker, bobler og gummihansker – rundt om i butikken. Kl. 19:00 vil det være en mottakelse hvor publikum får en sjanse til å møte kunstnerne Lossius og Wignell.

Modularitet er bruk av standardiserte elementer som kan kombineres på ulike måter. Dette er utbredt innenfor så forskjellige områder som teknologi, programmering, kunst, design, arkitektur og varetransport. Modularitet er dermed også knyttet til prosesser som standardisering og globalisering. Lossius og Wignells installasjon undersøker generelle ideer om modularitet, og særlig konvensjoner og standarder i interiørdesign og arkitektur (for eksempel kjøkkenløsninger) som i stor grad har blitt definert av IKEA.

Trond Lossius er en lyd- og installasjonskunstner som bor i Bergen, Norge. Hans undersøkelser av lyden i rommet er relatert til kunst og musikk, samt forskning og programutvikling. Han har samarbeidet med andre kunstnere i et stort antall tverrfaglige prosjekter, særlig lydinstallasjoner og arbeid for scene, og hans verk har blitt presentert i Norge og utlandet. Med Verdensteatret vant han New York Dance and Performance Awards a.k.a. The Bessies 2005-2006 i kategorien Installation & New Media. Han ble uteksaminert med en mastergrad i geofysikk, han har studert musikk og komposisjon ved Griegakademiet, og var stipendiat i kunst ved Kunsthøgskolen i Bergen 2003-07. Anna Wignell er en svensk billedkunstner, basert i Stockholm/Gøteborg/Berlin. Hun arbeider med installasjon og arbeidet omfavner en rekke medier som video, tekst, lys, osv. Spørsmål om refleksivitet resonerer i hennes arbeid som utforskning av de iboende maktstrukturer og tekniske prosesser i media som er presentert i hennes verk. Anna Wignell har stilt ut på Bonniers Konsthall i Stockholm (2009), InterAccess Electronic Media Arts Center i Toronto (2010), Skånes Konstförening i Malmö (2011), Infernoesque i Berlin (2011). Roar Sletteland er aktivist i den samtidsmusikalske undergrunnen i Bergen. ”Eske med platespiller” ble laget for å generere musikalsk materiale til Torstein Aagaard-Nilsens musikkstykke «Random Grumble» som Ny Musikk Bergen bestilte i 2010. Den består av en modifisert platespiller som spiller brokker av musikk i skiftende – men alltid feil – tempo. Hver gjennomspilling varer i ti minutter, men det vi hører er forskjellig fra gang til gang ettersom stiften flytter seg vilkårlig rundt på platen. Noen ganger gjenkjenner vi den opprinnelige musikken, andre ganger er den redusert til abstrakte klanger og støy.

Fluxus flash performance. Fluxus stammer fra et internasjonalt nettverk av kunstnere, komponister og designere, kjent for sin blanding av medier og disipliner på 1960-tallet, hvor stykkene er enkle og humoristiske – som her med bruk av kremkaker, bobler og gummihansker. Flash performance indikerer at dette er korte hendelser.

Three Cities Project: Live Event - MUSA, Aberdeen

Three Cities Project er et kunstnerisk og kulturelt utvekslingstiltak mellom de tre byene Aberdeen, Bergen og St petersburg. Et kveldsprogram ved MUSA i Aberdeen vil presentere et variert program av nye lydarbeid og audiovisuelle arbeid av Ross Whyte, Pete Stollery, Trond Lossius og Suk-Jun Kim så vell som arbeid fra workshops i byene.

This project involves the contribution, participation and experience from the three centres and will take place over a period of months, involving different communities from each country.

The main aim is for participants to learn about and engage with aural culture from each of the three areas through working with sound recordings. A secondary aim is to develop cultural links between the three areas.

One thing in common with all three cities is that they all are coastal, so it is natural to assume that people’s life in these cities must have always been influenced by the sea – like a large magnet, people must have always felt its omnipresence.

Part 1 of the project starts simply (by two Aberdeen-based composers working with one from the actual city where the recordings are being made) asking people in these three cities the direction to the sea. We will ask this question to people in various parts of each city so the answers will always be different, and of course, will be in the language of the inhabitant. Sound and image will be captured from these discussions and the subsequent travel from that position towards the sea. Three composers/sound artists will use a small head-mounted camcorder to collect video footage and a set of binaural microphones for sound capture. Each composer will start their journey from very different parts of the city to the sea by asking for directions.

An installation is then created that includes video and audio recorded in all three cities presented in sound festival 2011.

Part 2 of the project involves the in-country composer working with a community of their choice (children, students, general public, etc) using the sounds recorded in that country. Participants will create music and sound art using computers and sound transformation software with recordings that reflect a sense of place which can be transmitted through the medium of sound.

Barbora Svarcova & Dana Machajova i Galleri Fisk

Galleri Fisk stiller ut arbeider av Barbora Švarcova & Dana Machajová, to kunststudenter fra Praha.

BEK bidrar med utstyr til utstillingen.

“Prosjektet som stilles ut er basert på fotografiserien Le Mouvement av Étienne-Julese Marey fra slutten av 1800-tallet, denne analyserer menneskelig bevegelse ved bruk av fotografi. Bevegelse er avbildet som noe som eliminerer eventuelle objekter eller romlige elementer som vanligvis er målet for fotografiapparatet.
Vårt sentrale punkt er bildet av figuren dekket i svarte klær med hvite merker som brukes for videre bevegelsesanalyse. Vi ønsker å finne kroppen i rommet igjen. For å gjøre dette vil vi paradoksalt nok fokusere på dens fravær. Vi bruker vitenskapens språk å svekke det rasjonelle, og overføre fokus fra dets resultater til dets midler.”

Barbora Švarcova (Tsjekkia) og Dana Machajová (Slovakia) er to unge kunstnere basert i Praha.

De har henholdsvis studert og studerer Audiovisuelle studier ved FAMU, Film Faculty og Performing Arts.

MUU FOR EARS

MUU FOR EARS er en serie CD-er med lydkunst og eksperimentel musikk utgitt av den finske kunstnerorganisasjonen MUU. MUU FOR EARS 9 har bidrag fra Finland og Norge, bl.a. av Marieke Verbiesen, Hemmelig Tempo og Trond Lossius fra Bergen. Utgivelsen markeres med slippefest på Lydgalleriet hvor Trond Lossius og Joonas Siren vil opptre.

The new CD Compilation “MUU FOR EARS 9″ explores the sound art and experimental music scenes in Finland and Norway. The compilation contains a wide range of material, including field recordings, sound installations, experimental musical improvisations, remix and sample compositions and live recordings.

The artists on MUU FOR EARS 9 are Child Of Klang, Hemmelig Tempo, Trond Lossius and Marieke Verbiesen from Norway, with Mikko Maasalo, Aleksi Myllykoski/Urban Dark Ensemble, Antti Nykyri and Joonas Siren/Younghusband from Finland.

MUU FOR EARS Event at Lydgalleriet in Bergen offers a unique opportunity to experience new innovative music and sound art. During the event following artists from the CD compilation will perform: Trond Lossius and Joonas Siren.

Trond Lossius is a sound and installation artist based in Bergen. His work is a continuous exploration of sound in space. He is educated in geophysics, music composition and sound art, and combines artistic practice and research with software development.

Joonas Siren is a Helsinki-based aural/visual artist. He often works with sound and uses it in many different ways and contexts. His visual works are often located within the fields of digital art, installation and site-specific art.

The event is organised by Artists’ Association MUU in cooperation with Lydgalleriet in Bergen.

MUU is an artist run, Finnish interdisciplinary artist association, founded in 1987 to represent and promote new and experimental forms of art. The aims of Muu are to develop the collaboration and interchange of artists working within different fields, to produce projects, events, seminars and exhibitions of the Muu (”the Other”) art fields and to arouse cultural political discussion.

Birk på BEK og Vossajazz

Birk Nygaard har brukt de siste ukene på å forberede seg til Vossajazz. BEKs prosjektrom har blitt ommøblert med lysende projeksjoner av goemetriske figurer.

Tre uker i mars har Birk ferdigstilt teknikk og metode til sin forestående opptreden på Vossajazz fredag 30. mars, sammen med Gunhild Seims “Story Water”, et bestillingsverk inspirert av tekster om død og drømmer.

Birks tilnærming til prosjektet har vært å forbedre hvordan å ta opp den musikalske ytelse og prestasjon, mer enn å relatere seg til “det uendelige” i tekstene som har inspirert Gunhilds komposisjoner.

Gjennom MAX/msp og tips hentet inn fra BEKS ekspertise på dette feltet har Birk ferdigprogrammert en sentral patch til bruk i det som best kan beskrives som et video/lys-orgel hvor bandets instrumenter trigger øremerkede animasjoner som kretser rundt estetikken til geometriske figurer. Presentert gjennom modul8/Madmapper-plattformen, vil Birk prøve å fange essensen av bandets konsertfremføring.

Visuelt akkompagnement til musikk har vært Birks prosjekt i noen år nå. Han har jobbet med alt fra klassiske komposisjoner til klubbmusikk, sist kjent for sitt samarbeid med den norske rapperen Lars Vaular.

I tillegg har Birk bruk perioden i prosjektrommet til formalisering av noen fremtidige prosjekter.

We are delighted to announce the 1st International Workshop on Musical Metacreation (MUME2012) to be held October 9, 2012, in conjunction with the Eighth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Interactive Digital Entertainment (AIIDE’12).

Thanks to continued progress in artistic and scientific research, a new possibility is emerging in our musical relationship with technology: Generative Music or Musical Metacreation, the design and use of computer music systems which are “creative on their own”. Metacreation involves using tools and techniques from artificial intelligence, artificial life, and machine learning, themselves often inspired by cognitive and life sciences. Musical Metacreation suggests exciting new opportunities to enter creative music making: discovery and exploration of novel musical styles and content, collaboration between human performers and creative software “partners”, and design of systems in gaming and entertainment that dynamically generate or modify music.

The workshop will bring together artists, practitioners and researchers interested in developing software and systems that autonomously (or interactively) recognize, learn, represent, complete, accompany, compose or interpret music. In particular, emphasis will be put on systems with real-time aspects, since these are relevant to both art and entertainment communities.

Topics

We encourage paper and demo submissions on topics including the following:

Novel representations of musical information
Systems for autonomous or interactive music composition
Systems for automatic generation of expressive musical interpretation
Systems for learning or modelling music style and structure
Systems for intelligently remixing or recombining musical material
Advances or applications of AI, machine learning, and statistical techniques for musical purposes

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PERFORMANCES

Live Interfaces is a conference on live, technology-mediated interaction in performance. The conference seeks to investigate cross-disciplinary understandings of performance technology with a particular focus on issues related to the notion of ‘liveness’ in interaction.

Live Interfaces will consist of paper and poster presentations, performances and workshops over two days. Researchers, theorists and artists from diverse fields are encouraged to participate, including: digital performance, live art, computer music, choreography, music psychology, interaction design, human computer interaction, digital aesthetics, computer vision, smart materials and augmented stage technology.

We invite submissions addressing the conference theme of technology-mediated live interaction in performance, and suggest the following indicative topics:

Biophysical sensors
Brain-computer interfaces
Computer vision/real-time video in performance
Cross-modal perception/illusion
Digital dramaturgy/choreography/composition
Digital performance phenomenology
Gesture recognition and control

Paper submissions should be in extended abstract form, with a suggested length of 500 words. Please format all submissions using either the Word or LaTeX template available from the website.

Performance proposals should include a description of the performance and the live interaction technology used, as well as a list of technical requirements. Attaching recordings of past performances is strongly encouraged.

We hope to announce a journal special issue on performance technology following the conference as a publication opportunity for extended papers.

Extended abstracts must be submitted electronically via the website by midnight (GMT+1) on the 17th June 2012. All submissions will be subject to cross-disciplinary peer review, and notified of acceptance by 1st July.

Software and data have increasingly become an integral part of our research in the audio and music community. In the process, the way that we do research in this field is changing, with methods and software becoming increasingly complex, and reliable datasets becoming increasingly important.

The first SoundSoftware.ac.uk one-day workshop on “Software and Data for Audio and Music Research” will include talks and discussions on issues such as robust software development for audio and music research, reproducible research, management of research data, and open access. While our project is concentrating on the audio and music research community, we believe many of these issues will have wider interest, and we want to link with other communities for which proper handling of research software and data are important.

Welcome to an exciting workshop with leuco dye-based thermo-chromic inks. These inks are temperature sensitive compounds, developed in the 1970s that temporarily change colour with exposure to heat.
The workshop will be held by Marjan Kooroshina who is a PhD student in smart textiles at Textile and Fashion University of Borås-Sweden.

Her practice and research revolves around interactive textiles, new materials, processes, technology and technique development. Her study focus on “textile printing technique” and is an investigation of how to use smart textile materials (Thermo-Chromic color, crystal ink, photo luminescent color and Hydro-Chromic color) in different temperatures. She then combines skills in the craft with new technology in order to develop innovative textile design concepts for both contemporary and future use.

Global cross-media company Power to the Pixel has announced the dates for its 6th Cross-Media Forum which will take place in London from 16 – 19 October 2012.

Firmly established as being at the forefront of creative and business innovations from around the world, the four-day event incorporates a conference, investor forum and two-day co-production market for top international cross-media projects – The Pixel Market. The forum is once again held in association with the BFI London Film Festival (10 – 25 October).

Past conference keynotes have included Starlight Runner’s Jeff Gomez; multi- award-winning producer Ted Hope; Michel Reilhac, Executive Director ARTE France Cinéma and Ira Deutchman, Managing Partner Emerging Pictures and creator of Fineline Features.

At the centre of The Cross-Media Forum lies the third edition of The Pixel Market on 17 & 18 October 2012. Unique in bringing together over 100 international financiers, commissioners and decision-makers from film, broadcast, publishing, advertising, mobile, tech and interactive under one roof, the market is dedicated to showcasing and financing cross-media projects from around the world. 30 producers will compete for multiple awards including the prestigious Pixel Pitch Prize sponsored by ARTE in 2011, with £6,000 awarded to Kaarle Aho & Tonislav Hristov for Love & Engineering.

The Pixel Pitch jury will be made up of international decision-makers, commissioning executives and financiers working in film, broadcast, publishing, online, advertising, gaming, the arts and interactive media.

Day 2 of the market on 18 October will offer one-to-one business meetings to all project teams with potential investors and partners from media, tech and finance.

Each project’s story will span any combination of film, TV, online, mobile, interactive, publishing, live events and gaming to entice and engage with audiences.

Entries are invited from producer-led teams with a strong track record in film, broadcast, interactive media or other relevant creative industries. Projects must include the use of new tools, platforms, services and devices and be at an advanced stage of development.

Bringing together some of the most pioneering media professionals and digital experts in the world, Power to the Pixel’s annual Forum possesses an energetic, collaborative format that has fostered an
active international film and media community responsible for helping build cross-media businesses and finance innovative cross-media projects.

Torsdag 22. mars kl 19.00 inviterer KinoKino til debatt og spør: Er dataspill kunst eller underholdning? Eller begge deler? Avhenger definisjonen av om dataspill er kunst, av definisjonen på hva som er kunst? Bli med på debatten!
Som estetisk uttrykk har dataspillsjangeren så vidt oppnådd å bli belyst i norsk sammenheng, og mye er ennå ikke analysert og diskutert rundt dataspill som medium og dets egenart. Internasjonalt har debatten imidlertid rast en stund. Kan spill oppnå anerkjennelse som en kunstnerisk uttrykksform, eller vil det alltid forbli underholdning? Denne debatten synliggjør hvordan ulike vurderinger av dataspill sitt forhold til kunst kan avhengige av den kunstdefinisjon man legger til grunn. Ulike tilnærminger og perspektiv på denne debatten vil presenteres med et kunstteoretisk og et kontemporært blikk – og med presentasjoner av en kunstner, en spillutvikler og en kurator sin praksis med spill estetikk, mekanikk og interaktiv design.
Deltakere: Marieke Verbiesen(NL) har en MFA i Interactive Media Arts og jobber som kunstner med Dataspill og dataspillteknologi, hun er tilknyttet Bergen Senter for elektronisk kunst.
Lill Eilertsen(NO) Cand. philol, er folklorist og opptatt av skillet mellom folkelig kultur og finkultur. Hun har presentert dataspillenes estetiske kvaliteter på diverse workshops og konferanser.

Moderator: Emil Bach Sørensen (DK) er kurator og kunstnerisk leder av kuratorplattform Maskinstorm i København. Maskinstorm står bak flere kunst-og teknologi prosjekter, blant annet bak dataspill utstillingen MINE06.

We have published an open call to attract additional workshops, artists and volunteers to the Art.on.Wires Festival. Please spread the word to your friends and local communities.

The Art.on.Wires Festival is now looking for submissions of workshops, artworks and presentations.

Art.on.Wires is an annual arts and science festival for young and innovative artists, researchers and creative professionals who work in the fields of new media art, information technology, and communication design. From 30. April to 5. May 2012 we set up a temporary laboratory in Oslo, Norway with the aim of creating, exploring and researching emerging forms of artistic expression enabled by new media technology.
