Gisle Martens Meyer: There is no Here, Here

Skjermbilde_2017-02-16_kl

Facing us on stage: a musician. He plays electronica. Works his machines like a hacker. But we can see him much better on screen. There, reality is different, and constantly changing.

The performance is co-produced by BEK, with BIT Teatergarasjen. A version was also shown at Oktoberdans 2016.

Behind the controls he directs his own live screen life. We see him there on stage, and we see him on film, in social media, in video games, on digital screens in the screen, in selfies, on Instagram, on posters, in commercials, in dating apps… Where we really are and what we see, soon becomes a big question. Where does this performance take place?

“There is no Here, Here” is based on William Gibson’s books, the science fiction author who invented the word cyberspace, and his bleak visions of lonely hackers battling digital reality. This is no longer fiction, no longer future. Today we all live in these fragmented realities. The devices control us, digital profiles socialize for us, algorithms choose for us – the Internet of things connects us to an increasing extent, the Net is always with us, and we, we are no longer really here.
