4-15 Music & Technology is pleased to announce the release of the newest version of its "Running CPU Usage" Extra for Max/MSP.
"Running CPU Usage" provides more detailed information about CPU usage during digital signal processing than the standard Max/MSP DSP Status Window. It samples DSP usage twice as often, tracking minimum, maximum, and average usage, thereby providing tools for a more precise analysis of how much CPU power is used by your MSP patches.
Statistics are tracked both for the total time DSP is running and for the most recent ten seconds. This second option aids in tracking how changing parameters in a patch effect CPU usage.
The current version now caclulates confidence intervals for both the total running time and the most recent ten seconds. Additionally, an issue in calculating confidence intervals that sometimes led to incorrect values has been addressed. Most importantly, the user experience has been improved by updating the display less often than the data sampling rate. In previous releases, numbers were often updated faster than they could be read. Data is still sampled at a high rate to provide the most accurate information possible, while screen updates have been reduced to improve legibility.
Running CPU Usage is available for both Mac OS and Windows versions of Max/MSP. It can be downloaded free of charge from http://www.bek.no/~pcastine/Litter/Examples/index.html#Usage and is designed for use in the Extras folder in Max/MSP. Running CPU Usage requires the Litter Starter Pack, which is available for download free of charge from http://www.bek.no/~pcastine/Litter/index.html#Try . Version 1.3 of Running CPU Usage replaces the version currently bundled with Litter.
